Minnesota Marine Art Museum

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona, Minnesota is strengthening its connections to local audiences of all ages with Second Saturdays, a new community series that is in its second month.

The second Saturday of each month through October will feature a number of special programs and activities – and museum admission will be just $1 throughout the day, 10AM to 5PM. There will be short tours, art-making projects and other themed activities planned for each month’s unique program. The theme for April 14th’s Second Saturday is “A Longer Look: Slow Art Day.”

April 14 is Slow Art Day, where 185 museums across the country challenge visitors to slow down and discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. MMAM Second Saturday attendees will be invited to participate in a Slow Art Challenge, where people are asked to spend between 5-10 minutes looking at a work of art. Two art-making activities will be offered all day. This month, we will have a folk art wood-carving project and a mini-canvas painting project available for all ages and abilities. A tour will be offered every half hour. Tour themes this month include a highlights tour of MMAM’s collections, a children’s tour, and a special Longer Look Tour, that will explore two artworks in depth. There will be periodic musical performances throughout the day from cellist Rachael Ryan Dahlgren. A detailed schedule of events can be found at mmam.org/SecondSaturdays.

"Most of us consume lots of information at one time,” says MMAM Curator of Education Heather Casper. “I am often guilty of looking at my phone while watching TV while talking to my husband. Slow Art Day encourages us to spend some real time at an artwork and with ourselves to allow for deeper reflection and greater understanding of both."

The Museum is thrilled to offer this new programming thanks to a prestigious arts access grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. The highly competitive process encourages arts organizations across the state to invest in programming that creates long-term engagement between arts organizations and their communities.

MMAM is in its 11th year of operation and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization owned by its members. The Museum’s mission is to engage visitors in meaningful visual arts experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water.
