The December Laureate Writers Series will feature a Book Launch of poet, performance artist and radical activist Mai’a Williams’ new memoir This is How We Survive: Revolutionary Mothering, War, and Exile in the 21st Century. The event will be followed by an open mic. The event is free and open to the public. Theme for the open mic is Freedom.

Mai’a Williams is the co-editor of the anthology Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines and author of two chapbooks of poetry, No God but Ghosts and Monsters and Other Silent Creatures. In her memoir This is How We Survive: Revolutionary Mothering, War and Exile in the 21st Century, Williams shares her experiences working in conflict zones and with liberatory, resistance communities as a journalist, human rights worker and midwife in Palestine, Egypt, Chiapas, Berlin, and the U.S. while mothering her young daughter. She has seen first-hand what ails the world and does not mince words in sharing her observations and insights.

This event is co-sponsored by the Blue Heron Coffeehouse and the Winona Fine Arts Commission.

The Laureate Writer’s Series is sponsored by the City of Winona’s Fine Arts Commission. The City of Winona is a partner of River Arts Alliance.
