Set Against a Sky: a Paper Cut Installation

The Winona Arts Center presents “Set Against a Sky”, paper cut installation by Matthew Winkler from June 22 through July 16. The public is invited to the opening reception for the exhibit on Wednesday, June 22nd from 4:30-6:30pm.

Winkler has created a series of large, multi-layered forms that will hang in the Winona Arts Center space. These cloud-like forms are built from dozens of intertwined cut and folded paper shapes of that reference branches and pathways. The hanging shapes will be accompanied by contrasting imagery – digital prints depicting flowing water.

Winkler, from Rochester, MN creates multi-layered drawings and sculptures that are a poetic response to the built and natural world. He earned an MFA from Cal State Long Beach and BA from Williams College and is a 2014 recipient of a Southeastern MN Arts Council grant and has exhibited his work in southeastern MN, the Twin Cities, and Los Angeles. He currently teaches as adjunct faculty at Winona State University and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and lives in Rochester, MN.
