Mayo High School
1420 11th Ave. SE | Rochester, MN

The John Paulson Big Band & the Mayo High School Jazz band set to perform at Mayo High School in Rochester, MN March 11.

The 18-piece John Paulson Big Band will perform a free public concert at 7:00 pm Monday March 11 at Mayo High School in Rochester with the Mayo High Jazz Bands directed by Aaron Cole and Katherine Anderson opening the show. The concert is the culmination of an artist residency supported by at grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council. This is a very special event for Dr. Paulson because this year marks 50 years since he graduated from Mayo and participated in the music program there. Paulson taught jazz at Saint Mary’s University for over 30 years and recently retired from part time teaching at Winona State University. His first big band CD “The John Paulson Big Band Project” was released in 2012 and the band’s 2nd CD “Five Years On” came out last November. That recording was recently selected as one of the top 10 CD’s of 2018 by the jazz station KBEM in the Twin Cities.

The John Paulson Big Band includes some of the best jazz players and teachers in the region. They are unique in that they perform only original big band jazz composed and arranged by musical director and saxophonist John Paulson. The music is an exciting mix of contemporary blues, Latin, ballads, funk and swing with plenty of solo space for the players. This concert will feature Twin-Cities guest artists Adam Meckler (trumpet and flugelhorn), and guitarist Scott Gerry plus the addition of vocalist and recording artist Ariane Lydon
