The Spring Concert Band performance features a new work composed for the band through the ongoing Kaplan Commissioning Project. Nigun Prophesy was composed by Dr. David Avshalomov for the band after winning last year’s Kaplan Commission competition. Twenty years ago the Sam and Helen Kaplan Foundation gave Saint Mary’s a significant financial gift for the purpose of building a Jewish-Christian dialog and providing means for students to directly interact with Jewish religion and culture.

Approximately every other year since 2000, Dr. Janet Heukeshoven and the Saint Mary’s Concert Band has commissioned a new work through a competitive application process. This year’s piece incorporates the human voice (band members sing as well as play) and is based on traditional Jewish liturgical melodies. Past Kaplan composers have written works for full band, choir and wind ensemble, jazz combo and band, wind ensemble and piano, and concert band with solo baritone voice. Other pieces included on this concert celebrate contemporary American composers.

Tickets: $5-10, available at pagetheatre.org or by calling 507-457-1715.
