Playwright Margaret Shaw Johnson will present a “page to stage” talk about her upcoming play “Mister James & Mister Jeff” at the May Laureate Writers Series. Depending on rehearsal demands, her presentation may be followed by short readings from the play, then a Q&A. Please note that there will not be an Open Mic after the presentation.

“Mister James & Mister Jeff” shows us what happened when two slaves who had escaped from the war-torn South found their separate ways to Winona. Ms. Johnson will talk about the genesis of the project, her research, and other aspects of the production. This event is meant for writers in general, but especially for playwrights or anyone interested in writing about historical subjects. The event is free and open to the public.

“Mister James & Mister Jeff” will be performed from May 16-19 at Winona’s Historic Masonic Theatre, 255 Main Street and tickets are available at Chapter Two Books, the Winona County History Center and on-line through brownpapertickets.com. There is a link to the ticketing site on our Facebook page. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students.

The Laureate Writer’s Series is sponsored by the City of Winona’s Fine Arts Commission. The City of Winona is a partner of River Arts Alliance. Margaret Shaw Johnson is a member of the River Arts Alliance. To learn more about the benefits of membership, please visit: riverartsalliance.org/JOIN.
