Calling all Winona creatives, designers, artists, makers, scientists, engineers, developers, storytellers, and problem-solvers from all walks of life:

The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (or Space Apps) is a large scale creative collaborative event that will take place over a 48-hour period in communities around the globe. This annual weekend embraces innovative problem solving, with a goal of creating open-source solutions to challenges we currently face on Earth and in Space. Space Apps 2018 spanned 200 locations, with 18,000 participants in 75 countries, and since 2012 this initiative has been growing worldwide.

This focused brainstorming and idea development marathon is open to anyone who has a passion to have an immediate impact on the world. Everyone with a desire to work with others on designing real solutions to global challenges put forth by NASA can access to their open-source data and images, and receive support from the local host venue as they create new ideas in a direct, hands-on environment.

This year’s Challenge categories include: Earth’s Oceans, Our Moon, Planets Near and Far, To the Stars, and Living in our World. Solutions to past Challenges have included so much more than software applications, for example: an interactive acoustic map of the Earth, a virtual reality experience of the Moon, an innovative emergency shelter, a lab test kit for Mars, and an educational game about climate change.

Space Apps Winona, hosted at Winona State University is the local branch of this event. Registration is required but there is no cost to attend. Participants can work independently or join a team, and attend for part or all of the weekend. Space Apps is geared for ages 14 and up and all are welcome. Local judges will assess proposed solutions completed by the end of the weekend and there will be prizes, snacks and t-shirts provided to support and energize collaborators throughout. Anyone who is passionate about space exploration, the environment, education and our global society, please join us!
