DESCRIPTION:Winona Arts Center | 228 E 5th St.\nwinonaarts.org \nThe Twin Cities-based music ensemble\, The Poor Nobodys\, will perform a live original score accompanying the screening of the silent Swedish film A Man There Was at the Winona Arts Center on January 28th. Following the screening\, there will be Q&A\, a short intermission\, and an additional set of original music by the band. There is a suggested donation fee of $10. \nBased on Henrik Ibsen’s epic poem and directed by Victor Sjöström\, A Man There Was (Terje Vigen) was released in 1917 when many Scandinavian immigrants were arriving in Minnesota. The film tells the story of a Norwegian sailor who in 1814 takes on a British blockade to find food for his family. This rare screening is part of a statewide tour by the Poor Nobodys in support of this classic film. Learn more.

DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Marine Art Museum | 800 Riverview Dr.\nmmam.org/artsxchange \n\nFrozen River Film Festival Managing Director Eileen Moeller will lead an artsXchange conversation on Saturday\, January 21\, about the nature of creative work and how we share our stories through a variety of mediums. What is creative work? Who is allowed to do it? What are the differences between capital “A” Art and creative work? In this artsXchange\, Eileen will invite us to think about who is an artist and who has a story to tell. Participants will explore the museum’s collections and current exhibitions\, with special attention to Water Stories: New Work by Anne Labovitz before it leaves the museum on January 22nd. \nThe event is free for members of MMAM or RAA and is free with general museum admission for all others. Walter Cannon is the author of The Possible World\, a chapbook collection\, and his poems\, essays and reviews have appeared in a variety of journals and books including “Nimrod\,” “The Blue Earth Review\,” “Mid-America Poetry Review” and “The Upstart Crow.” He is Professor Emeritus of English at Central College in Pella\, Iowa.
