The event will take place at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse at 7 pm followed by a book signing and an open mic. The event is free and open to the public. If you are visually impaired you will find Cohn’s work particularly compelling and unlike any other you will encounter. The Braille Encyclopedia: Brief Essays on Altered Sight examines vision loss and relearning to read and write as an adult. Cohn is a writer and teaching artist. Her past includes a childhood among Chicago academics; involvement in a guerrilla feminist art collective; and work as an encyclopedia copy editor\, community organizer\, grant writer\, fundraising consultant\, and therapist. The 18-piece John Paulson Big Band includes some of the best jazz players and teachers in the region. It’s two hours of toe-tapping happy music. There may be a couple jokes laced into the rests. (We need all the humor we can get right now.) It is in their back room where food and beverages are available for purchase. The band is worth it. Come have a good time with us.

Eric Heukeshoven will serve as composer-in-residence for the 47th Annual High School Honor Band Festival on Saturday\, November 2 at Winona State University. A 5:00 pm concert will feature the premiere of “re-synth” for concert band and music technology. Heukeshoven describes the new work as a modern take on the classical “Concerto Grosso\,” where the musical material is passed between a small group of soloists (concertino) and full ensemble (ripieno). On Sunday\, November 3 at 2:00 pm\, Heukeshoven’s “re-synth” and “My Music Reaches to the Sky” will be given a second performance by the WSU Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven\, Interim Director of Bands.
