SUMMARY:Prior To The Fields- How Humans and the Land Interact Exhibition Opening and Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Dec 12 | 5-7 pm\nBlue Heron Cafe 162 W 2nd St Winona\, MN\nExhibit on display Dec. 9\, 2025 – Feb. 2\, 2026 \nPrior to the Fields: an exhibition of drawings by Lois Peterson and Lynn Hobart. SUMMARY:An Eye For An I: Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Nov. 13 | 5-7 pm\nBlue Heron Coffeehouse\n162 W 2nd St\, Winona\, MN 55987 \nHola\, Friends \nMy memoir\, An Eye for An I: Growing Up With Blindness\, Bigotry and Family Mental Illness is set to be released on November 4th by the University of Minnesota Press. Please join me for the Winona Launch Party at Blue Heron from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday\, November 13th. There will be delicious appetizers from the good folksat the Blue Heron\, a slideshow\, a reading or two\, music\, and salsa dancing to close out the celebration. \nIf you are unable to make the Launch Party\, I will be on a panel of memoir writers on Saturday\, November 8th at 10AM at the Winona Public Library. I hope you can join us for one or both of the above events. \nThe memoir is to be featured on several podcasts including the Midwest Writers Room\, the Kindness Matters podcast\, and Minnesota Reads\, a\nweekly Minnesota radio segment on The North 103.3 FM. If you know of podcasts\, book groups or classrooms that might benefit from discussing\nthe topics above\, please feel free to share that information with me. \nMil Gracias\, Jim Bonilla \nPS. It is not too late to pre-order An Eye for An I. I’m told that pre-orders make a huge difference to a book’s success because publishers devote more time and money to a book that is already selling well.  Order here.  Thanks. \nA sample of reviewers’ comments: \n“Whether you come to this book for insights about living with disability\, the impacts of racism and trauma\, or the emotional journey to healthy manhood\, you will  be captivated by the vivid tenderness of a masterful storyteller and inspired by the lessons about the resilience of the human spirit.”  – Steven Botkin\, founder and former executive director \, Men’s Resources International \n“Weaving together a poignant narrative made of personal vignettes\, James Francisco Bonilla tells of obstacles overcome\, insights gained\, and lives transformed by his commitment to social justice and self-understanding. With its intersectional analysis of racism\, mental illness\, and disability\, this memoir brings a fresh and inspiring voice to the world of social justice literature.”—Beverly Daniel Tatum\, PhD\, author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Oness to present at Laureate Writers Series
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 8 | 7:00 pm\nBlue Heron Coffeehouse\nFree and open to the public \nThe Laureate Writers Series will feature local writer Elizabeth Oness as its October presenting artist. Her appearance will feature Oness’ latest novel\, The Hopefuls. This Wednesday event at the Blue Heron departs from the usual first Tuesday scheduling for the program. \nOness’ creative writing life is deeply grounded in Winona experiences. While living on a biodynamic farm in Southeast Minnesota\, she has been an active creative writer\, mentor\, and member of the English Department at Winona State University. She has published six books of fiction\, and several of her works have achieved significant honors. Her stories have received an O’Henry Prize\, a Nelson Algren Award\, and the Crazyhorse Fiction Prize. Beth also plays a mean fiddle with the Organic Music Cooperative at The Trempealeau Hotel every other Tuesday. \nMaureen Aitken\, author of The Patron Saint of Lost Girls\, describes The Hopefuls as “a beautiful collection about what happens after the dreams of true love\, elite instructors\, and academic jobs clash against the ballast of dwindling economies and cheating partners. Oness writes about the surprising ways the vulnerable and misunderstood are taken down\, or survive.” \nOness will read a selection from The Hopefuls\, and then will respond to questions from the audience. An open mic session will follow\, during which audience members are encouraged to read samples of their own creative works. \nThe Laureate Writer Series is co-sponsored by the Blue Heron Coffeehouse\, by Chapter 2 Books of Winona\, by Friends of the Winona Public Library\, by Sara and Richard Ricker\, and by Laurie Lucas. \nKen McCullough is a member of the River Arts Alliance. I have explored many mediums of expression. Stained glass\, jewelry\, beadwork\, photography\, pottery\, straw bale construction\, knife making\, digital art and now painting. One continuing thread with every medium has been my interest in Mandalas and Sacred Geometry. I thoroughly enjoy seeing the transition and progress from one medium to the next.”
