DESCRIPTION:Sept 2 | 7:00\nBlue Heron Coffeehouse\n162 W 2nd St\, Winona \nThe Laureate Writers’ Series for September 2 will feature Brenda Cárdenas\, Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate\, at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse. Cárdenas is Professor Emerita of English at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and former Milwaukee Poet Laureate. \nCárdenas has authored Trace\, winner of the 2023 Society of Midland Authors Award for Poetry and also silver winner of Foreword Review’s Indie Poetry Prize. A second book titled Boomrang\, and three chapbooks have also been published. Her other work includes the co-editing of two other volumes\, Resist Much/Obey Little: Inaugural Poems to the Resistance and Between the Heart and the Land: Latina Poets in the Midwest. \nCárdenas’ writings have appeared in many literary journals and anthologies\, including Latino Poetry: The Library of America Anthology\, Poetry\, Prairie Schooner\, Braving the Body\, Latinx Poetics: The Art of Poetry\, and Ghost Fishing: An Eco-Justice Anthology\, among others. Her poem “Mercy” originally published in SWIMM Everyday is included in the 2025 Best of the Net\nanthology\, and in 2024\, her poem “Para los Tin-Tun-Teros\,” set to choral music by Daniel Afonso\, was performed by the National Concert Chorus at Carnegie Hall. \nThe Laureates Series is sponsored by the Blue Heron Coffee House\, by Second Chapter Books of Winona\, by Friends of the Winona Public Library\, by Richard and Sara Ricker\, and by Laurie Lucas. The program begins at 7 p.m. and takes place at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse\, which serves beverages and treats. Cohn is a writer and teaching artist. Her past includes a childhood among Chicago academics; involvement in a guerrilla feminist art collective; and work as an encyclopedia copy editor\, community organizer\, grant writer\, fundraising consultant\, and therapist. He will read from his debut book Aerie\, recently published by Shipwreckt Books of Winona. Butterfass holds an MFA in poetry from the Vermont College of Fine Arts\, and has made his living as a college English instructor\, freelance outdoors writer\, bookstore owner\, and entrepreneur in the field of tourism. Aerie spans a quarter century of his writing life. Because of the Vice-Presidential Debate\, there will not be an open mic after Dan’s presentation. Kristin Young (banjo) and Donna Buckbee (nyckelharpa) will get us going by playing some old-time fiddle tunes and songs\, from 6:30-7:00. He currently lives close to the George Floyd murder scene\, and uses his passion for the arts for personal and community transformation. \nWriter Thomas R. Smith says this about Hansel: “Living near the epicenter of the tumultuous events of 2020…he turns out to be the perfect chronicler of that year. The in-person exhibition opens on Friday\, June 21 and will be on display through Sunday\, August 18. It can be seen during the Blue Heron Coffeehouse’s regular hours\, 7 am to 2 pm Wednesdays-Fridays and 8 am to 2 pm Saturdays-Sundays. The coffeehouse is located at 162 W Second Street in downtown Winona. Please join us for an opening reception at the Blue Heron from 5 to 7 pm on Friday\, June 21. The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be provided. \nThe online exhibition and showcase is published in a virtual flipbook format on RAA’s website at www.riverartsalliance.org/member-exhibit. Faust Sonnet Contest invites you to celebrate the opening of this year’s contest and National Poetry Month on Tuesday\, April 30\, 2024\, from 6:30 – 9 pm at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse. Live music by Flutistry will accompany social time starting at 6:30 pm. At 7 pm\, we will celebrate the life and legacy of the contest’s benefactor and former director\, Ted Haaland\, who passed away on February 17th. \nTed spent the years following the death of his beloved Maria writing poetry every day. Under his leadership\, a small\, local contest spread around the world\, with the 2023 event receiving 700 sonnets from poets in 43 US states and 16 other countries. Ted’s friends and admirers are invited to say a few words and/or share a poem in his honor at this event.
