SUMMARY:artsXchange with Pete Mutschler: Understanding and Using Technology in Creating Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Marine Art Museum | 800 Riverview Dr.\nRegister Here \nThe artsXchange program\, a collaboration between River Arts Alliance (RAA) and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM)\, continues on Thursday evening\, October 19\, with this event led by photographer and RAA member Pete Mutschler. \nTaking good pictures is easy these days. Creating great images is much harder\, but well within the reach of most people with a cell phone and a computer. For this workshop\, local photographer Pete Mutschler will walk you through the basics of where technology fits in your efforts to create great images and how you can use it to create your own style. Included in the program will be a discussion on how some of the great photographers in the past may have used technology and where tools\, such as those driven by artificial intelligence\, may lead us. Learn more. \nThis event is free to attend for members of RAA or MMAM\, and included with museum admission for others. Registration is required\, and space is limited to 25 attendees per program. If you are a River Arts Alliance member interested in hosting a future artsXchange\, please contact Arts Administrator Johanna Rupprecht at admin@riverartsalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Workshop - From Borders to Betweens and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Host Studio: Minnesota Marine Art Museum\, Oberton Education Room \nTuition: $500.00 [maximum 16 participants] \n**As of July 21\, this workshop has only one remaining space available. When full\, a waitlist will be offered. \nThis workshop is offered as part of Flora & Fauna – The Plein Air Experience\, 2023. \nIn this deeply exploratory\, yet hands-on plein air workshop\, you’ll be mentored by two of Minnesota’s master painters\, Fred Somers and Kami Mendlik\, as they impart and share their philosophies and approach to studying directly from nature. Using the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s dramatic outdoor landscape directly on the Upper Mississippi River\, day one will be a deep dive into studying color out of doors as Kami shares her approach using oil paints (applicable to all mediums).  Kami will lead you through a series of exercises to emphasize the importance of gathering the vital relationships of color in the landscape to capture the illusion of light and atmosphere in a painting. Fred will lead day two\, taking the inspiration from out of doors\, into the studio\, translating the abstract and mysterious onto canvas\, and share his unique approach using pastels (applicable to all mediums) to push the edge of creativity to express the mystery of nature. \nLearn more here. Register here. \nSee more information about Flora & Fauna – The Plein Air Experience\, 2023 here. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:artsXchange with Amanda Blue
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Marine Art Museum | 800 Riverview Dr.\nRegister Here \nThe artsXchange program\, a collaboration between River Arts Alliance (RAA) and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM)\, continues with this event led by soprano and RAA member Amanda Blue. \nWhat if every rule\, lesson\, practice about music flipped upside down… How would that shape the way that you think about music and the practice of music? Well\, American composer John Cage did just that and more. “A pioneer of indeterminacy in music\, electroacoustic music\, and non-standard use of musical instruments\, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde.” For this lecture\, Amanda Blue will be performing one of his famous vocal pieces named “Aria.” Through the performance and analysis of this piece\, along with a few others\, we will unpack the unique characteristics that make Cage’s works paint a picture of American contemporary music. \nHost Amanda Blue is a professional Opera singer currently based in the Midwest. This event is free to attend for members of RAA or MMAM\, and included with museum admission for others. Registration is required\, and space is limited to 25 attendees. Learn more.
