Tasked with arranging her mother’s funeral according to her family’s traditional expectations\, Sarah navigates her plans to relocate while grappling with the bookstore. \nAided by an ensemble of Eastern European neighbors\, opinionated aunties\, and a no-nonsense ex con-employee\, Sarah must face all her responsibilities while remaining true to herself. SUMMARY:John Paulson Big Band Anniversary Concerts at WAC
DESCRIPTION:Winona Arts Center | 228 E 5th St.\nwinonaarts.org \nCome and celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the John Paulson Big Band with two concerts at the Winona Arts Center\, Saturday\, February 4th at 7:00 pm and Sunday\, February 5th at 3:00 pm. The concerts will celebrate 10 years of successful concerts\, recordings and residencies by the band. The band’s repertoire includes straight ahead blues\, Latin and swing; ballads with vocals; and a twisted tango — all composed and arranged by Dr. Paulson. This group includes the top jazz performers and educators in the region and over the past decade\, they have performed to enthusiastic audiences locally\, regionally and nationally. DESCRIPTION:Winona Arts Center | 228 E 5th St.\nwinonaarts.org \nThings I’ve Seen\, a photo exhibition by Steve Schild\, runs February 3 through March 19 at the Winona Arts Center\, with an opening reception from 6-8 pm\, Friday\, Feb. 3. The exhibition can be viewed during gallery hours\, which are Wednesdays from 3 pm to 6 pm and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Schild is a hobbyist photographer who takes his camera along while walking and biking around Winona\, shooting mainly around Lake Winona and railroad tracks running through the city. His works include local scenes\, views of manhole covers and railroad-car art\, and closeups of frost on windows\, insects and flowers. Learn more.

SUMMARY:The Poor Nobodys Performing Live Score with Film A Man There Was
DESCRIPTION:Winona Arts Center | 228 E 5th St.\nwinonaarts.org \nThe Twin Cities-based music ensemble\, The Poor Nobodys\, will perform a live original score accompanying the screening of the silent Swedish film A Man There Was at the Winona Arts Center on January 28th. Following the screening\, there will be Q&A\, a short intermission\, and an additional set of original music by the band. There is a suggested donation fee of $10. \nBased on Henrik Ibsen’s epic poem and directed by Victor Sjöström\, A Man There Was (Terje Vigen) was released in 1917 when many Scandinavian immigrants were arriving in Minnesota. The film tells the story of a Norwegian sailor who in 1814 takes on a British blockade to find food for his family. This rare screening is part of a statewide tour by the Poor Nobodys in support of this classic film. Learn more.
