Winona Writers Group - June

Friday | June 11 | 3:30-5:30pm
may end early, depending on how many readers participate
Winona Public Library Learning Plaza

We are excited to announce this month we plan to meet outside at the Library Learning Plaza for sharing and critiquing our writing. Everyone attending will need to sign a liability waiver if they have not already done so. Bring your own chair if possible. There are two benches available, and the library can bring out a chair if necessary. We'll be meeting in person only this month, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, the meeting will be on Zoom using the link below.

Bring a copy of your writing that you wish to share (up to 2000 words) and the library staff will make copies for the group. As always, feel free to use the prompts below, change them, or ignore them and write your own idea. We will read aloud, then share verbal comments and suggestions. We hope to see you at the meeting.

June Prompts:

  • June is the month for Father's Day. Coincidentally, both my parents were born in June. Write about a parent: your own, someone else, or even yourself as a parent.
  • Summer starts in June. For most of my life, my year has revolved around the school year. Summer has been my season off, a time to relax and refresh. What does summer mean to you? Write about a memory, an activity, a feeling, or something else that makes you think of summer.
  • In case of bad weather, join the Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86855941259.

In April and May, H3O Jazz Trio and Island City Brewing Company teamed up to raise funds for area non-profits as part of their popular monthly Jazz Jams. In just two months, over $1,200 has already been contributed!

June’s Jazz Jam fundraiser recipient will be the Winona Area Humane Society. WAHS was selected from a nomination made via H3O’s website: h3ojazz.com/jazz-jams/non-profit-nominations.html.

The June Jazz Jam will continue to welcome performers while raising money for area non-profits. H3O will contribute all donations (aka tips) received during the afternoon. Island City and H3O will match the total amount collected — tripling everyone’s contributions! Learn more.

    Crossings Book Launch

    Thursday | June 24 | 6:00pm
Winona County History Center | 160 Johnson St

Join us for a book launch of the recently-published anthology, Crossings: An Anthology of the Poets Laureate of Winona Minnesota, edited by Ken McCullough, published by Shipwreckt Books. The readers will be James Armstrong, Ken McCullough, Emilio DeGrazia and Lukas Ramsey, subbing for his sister Nicholle Ramsey. Copies of the anthology will be available for purchase after the reading as well as copies of books by the participating authors. The anthology is a handsome 130-page hardcover volume with 40 photographs taken from Winona’s history. Many of the poems relate to Winona historical events and persons and were written primarily during each poet’s tenure as Poet Laureate.

There will be a time for socializing from 6-6:30 with coffee and light refreshments during which the Bell House Band will be playing (James Armstrong, Connie Dretske and Bob Stuber), and Jim Reineke will play jazz selections on mandolin during book sales after the reading. This project was supported by the Southeast Minnesota Arts Commission, the Winona Foundation, the Lenfesty Family Foundation, and the River Arts Alliance. Copies will be available at The History Center, MMAM, Chapter 2 Books, and Paperbacks & Pieces.
