Throughout the pandemic, GRSF company members (and some guests) have been gathering together on Zoom on Monday evenings to read through plays together. Many of these are newer plays or plays we wouldn't normally get to produce here at the Festival. It's an extremely casual gathering - those interested join together on Zoom and Melissa Maxwell (without whom this series would not be possible!) shares the script on the screen and the reading begins.

January 31st, we will be doing a similar gathering - but this time you're invited! During the reading of Human Error by Eric Pfeffinger, you'll have a chance to hear what it is like when actors are discovering the text for the first time, and you'll be invited to join in a discussion about the play afterwards. We hope you can join us!

Nebraska-based photographic artist Jamie Ho will present work from her recent series Canton Gulf. In the words of the artist, "Canton Gulf is an ongoing photographic series that aims to preserve and examine my parents’ legacy and question if home is defined by geography or by embedded traditions."

Ho will have both a virtual exhibition hosted on the Watkins Gallery website as well as a physical exhibition open to Winona State University students, faculty and staff. The exhibition will be on view in the Watkins gallery weekdays from February 3–March 3, 9-4pm. More information about Jamie Ho is on the Watkins Gallery website here.

Joining from a distance or don’t have time to grab a kit before class? On February 17th, Linda LeGarde Grover and Angela Two Stars join the Winona State University community over Zoom to discuss the epidemic of murdered and missing indigenous women.

Linda LeGarde Grover is the author of several works of fiction and poetry including the recent acclaimed novel, In the Night of Memory, a coming of age story of two Ojibwe sisters whose mother has gone missing. Grover is Professor of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth and a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her writing, most recently the 2018 Minnesota Book Award for Memoir and Creative Nonfiction and the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award.

Angela Two Stars is the Director of All My Relations Arts gallery in Minneapolis and an accomplished and celebrated artist in the Minnesota Region. A major work by Angela Two Stars, commissioned by the Walker Art Center, will be installed in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in 2021. Two Stars will speak about her curation of the virtual exhibition, Bring Her Home, from All My Relations Arts, an annual exhibition that seeks to honor the identities of missing and murdered indigenous women and reveal the complexities of this epidemic. Angela Two Stars is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate.

Noche Ritual – Franklin Furnace (franklinfurnaceloft.org)

Nicolás with The Interior Beauty Salon holds space online at Franklin Furnace’s Loft for a group of creatives around the Earth to enact a series of vegan rituals. These micro-actions, carried on from homes from Rio de Janeiro to The Bronx, Puerto Rico and Minnesota, are intended to invoke healing —personal and collective—, serve as catalyst for inner and outer balance, and induce co-regulation as the night blossoms. The evening develops as a succession of under 2 minute gestures, some homeopathic while others more cathartic, are given birth one after the other.

Noche Ritual contemplates the possibility to perform art as refuge at a time of planetary sorrow and several concomitant pandemics brought forth by Covid-19: systemic racism, sexism, ageism, and the urgent ecological plight that we face as a species, among others. This event coincides with Nicolás’s 54th birthday. It also sends him off into the delicious unknown in the months and year(s) to come. Bring a blanket, a fruit and a knife to peel it. Blessings.

Scott Lowery's poems has been chosen for this one-of-a-kind deep winter arts event from Rochester. Local celebrities will read from an e-chapbook of new poems by SE MN poets and illustrated by regional artists, followed by a Q&A session with the project's poets and artists. The 2021 Intensive will be virtual with the potential for an in-person determined by COVID circumstances. We offer a wonderful well-rounded and personal experience for intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12-25.
