The Winona County Historical Society is a private non-profit educational institution, and with a mission to be dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of materials that document the history of Winona County.
The Society operates three museums. The Winona County History Center in downtown Winona houses the main museum facility, Laird Lucas Library and Archives, Society offices, Gift Shop, and event spaces. The Historic Bunnell House is located in Homer and the Rural Heritage Museum is being constructed on the Winona County Fair Grounds in St. Charles, which includes a log cabin, log barn, and one room schoolhouse.
WCHS offers many ways to experience the past and one of them is through the arts. From their collections on exhibit, to historic craft classes, to hosting the Art of Fine Furniture exhibition and Handmade Neighborhood Art Sale, WCHS is a community partner for a vibrant Winona.
A wide variety of events and programs are put on in Winona by WCHS. Don’t miss “Chocolate, Shakespeare, and Champagne” in June as Winona welcomes the Great River Shakespeare Festival each summer. The second weekend in October is host to their “Voices From the Past” event, where the past comes to life with community actors in beautiful Woodlawn Cemetery. WCHS partners and hosts programs with the Frozen River Film Festival, “A Page in History” series with The Page Theatre, among others too!
