HOPE AND FEATHERS: A CELEBRATION OF BIRD POEMS BY THE HEARTH with Scott Lowery
Scott will read a variety of famous-or-not poems about or for birds—among the not-so-famous may be a few of his own. Then Scott will serve as open mic host for members and other listeners who would like to share their own contributions to the evening. Save the date, and be thinking about (and practicing) your own favorites. Winona Bird Club programs are free and open to the public. Stick around for refreshments and chat after the program.
During the three or four years that Scott booked monthly guest speakers for the Winona Bird Club, he gradually began including a monthly bird poem along with his introductions. Nobody complained, and many were enthusiastic about listening, or at least that’s what they told him. Scott learned that other club members write poetry, or haiku, or fiction, and sometimes birds are involved. He’s looking forward to familiar faces and voices, admiring together the many meanings of birds in our lives.
Scott’s recent book, Mutual Life, won 2nd Prize in the 2024 Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets Chapbook Contest. The cover features a beautiful woodcut of a nuthatch on an oak trunk, by Minneapolis artist Emily Koehler. His earlier book, Empty-Handed, came out in an expanded second edition last summer from Red Dragonfly Press in Northfield. Both books are available in Winona at Chapter 2 Books. Scott will be happy to sell and sign books at the November program. Find lots more news and reviews at http://www.scottlowery.org/.
