On Tuesday, January 7th at 7 pm Daryl Lanz will read from his first book, Hitchhiking from Fort Lewis & Other Stories, at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse, 102 W 2nd St. The reading will be followed by an Open Mic–please bring a piece to share, that will raise our spirits.

Daryl Lanz was born and raised in Winona. He started writing as a teenager. He attended the University of Minnesota where he majored in English Education. He returned to Winona after graduation and eventually got a job in the local record store, which led to a 10-year career managing first that Winona store, and later record stores in St. Paul and Uptown Minneapolis. Returning once again to Winona, he embarked on a second career as a high school English teacher. Since 2012, he has owned the used bookstore, Chapter 2 Books in downtown Winona, where he can be found at least six days a week, along with his store cat Guildenstern. Daryl has also been active in theatre, from acting in community theatre in Fairmont to working with Theatre du Mississippi in Winona as an actor, director, and occasional stage manager. He has also directed the Fountain City River Players. For the past 15 years, he has worked with the Frozen River Film Festival, mostly as the head of the screening committee. He has also been a lifelong passionate reader, collector, and dealer of comic books. (Chapter 2 Books is a dream job, uniting his interest in books, music, and comics.) The stories in Hitchhiking from Fort Lewis & Other Stories were written over a span of 30+ years. Incidentally, Daryl’s book was published by Shipwreckt Books, here in Winona. He continues to write in whatever spare time he can find and is trying to decide which of his half-dozen unfinished novels he should be working on.

“Daryl’s stories remind me of Hemingway’s work, minus the macho.”
