The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) invites individuals, families, and the community to join the Big River Clean + Tree Planting—a free, all-ages event focused on environmental stewardship, sustainability, and riverside restoration. In collaboration with Fastenal, Coca-Cola of Winona, the Johnny Appleseed Project, the Landscape Arboretum at Winona State University, the Winona Chamber of Commerce, and the Winona Post, this Earth Day-inspired initiative will mobilize volunteer crews to collect litter from riverside and roadside areas and assist in maintaining MMAM’s six-acre shoreline habitat.

Participants will also plant trees to support clean water efforts and strengthen the museum’s climate-focused initiatives. The Johnny Appleseed Project and the Landscape Arboretum at Winona State University will be onsite giving away bare root trees for volunteers to plant at home, helping extend the positive environmental impact across the broader community.

“MMAM’s mission connects people to water through art—but also through action,” said Scott Pollock, the Executive Director at MMAM. “The Big River Clean + Tree Planting is an opportunity for our community to take meaningful steps toward protecting one thing we all appreciate – the river.”

Registered volunteers will receive free same-day admission to the museum. Tools, gloves, and guidance will be provided. All ages and abilities are welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. For more information and to register, please visit mmam.org/calendar2/2025/big-river-clean.

By bringing together local partners and passionate community members, the Big River Clean + Tree Planting advances MMAM’s commitment to sustainability, public engagement, and the health of our beloved Mississippi River. Learn more.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a nonprofit art museum that creates meaningful art experiences that explore our relationship with water. Located in Winona, Minnesota, the purpose-built museum is on the banks of the Mississippi River and boasts six galleries, an educational and events space, and a destination retail shop on its seven acre riverside campus. It is through this surprising diversity that MMAM is not only describing what marine art is, but pushing the boundaries of what marine art can be.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a member of the River Arts Alliance. To learn more about the benefits of membership, please visit: riverartsalliance.org/membership/. River Arts Alliance serves as fiscal sponsor of the Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest.
