Deadline for Applications
May 26 | 4 pm Central Daylight Time
The Overlook Plaza Project seeks to honor and reflect on the fortitude and resilience of the Indigenous people connected to the Upper Mississippi River Valley. This visual art will create awareness, education, and understanding of the importance of this region to our past, present, and future, and the bond created for all who are drawn to this unique place.
The city of La Crescent invites Indigenous artists and Indigenous artist-led teams from the following tribal communities to submit an expression of interest to create site-specific original artwork for a permanent exterior public art installation at Overlook Plaza, in La Crescent, MN:
Prairie Island Indian Community, Lower Sioux Indian Community, Upper Sioux Community, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Ho-Chunk Nation, Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, Meskwaki Nation (Sac and Fox), Kaw Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians and the Crow Tribe of Montana.
This first Indigenous History Public Art and Education project initiative by the city is meant to honor and reflect on the fortitude and resilience of the Indigenous people with connections to this region and may incorporate the use of languages, traditional teachings, symbols, and other cultural elements. The city welcomes concept proposals that help initiate awareness and understanding of the shared love of this unique place and the common bond it creates for those Indigenous people and the current and future residents of the City of La Crescent, Southeast Minnesota, and the Mississippi River Valley.
