Poet, Essayist, and Jazz Musician Richard Terrill to Read at Blue Heron

As part of the continuing Laureate Writers Series, Poet, Essayist, and jazz musician Richard Terrill will present his work at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse. His most recent books are What Falls Away Is Always: Poems and Conversations and Essentially, a book of essays.

 

Richard Terrill’s earlier books include Coming Late to Rachmaninoff, winner of the Minnesota Book Award for Poetry, and Saturday Night in Baoding: A China Memoir, winner of the Associated Writing Programs Prize for Nonfiction. Fakebook: Improvisations on a Journey

 

Back to Jazz recounts Terrill’s experiences as a weekend jazz musician. His writing has been published in a wide variety of magazines and journals. Terrill has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Wisconsin and Minnesota State Arts Boards, the Jerome Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, as well as three Fulbright Fellowships. He is Professor Emeritus at Minnesota State, Mankato, where he was a Distinguished Faculty Scholar and taught for many years in the MFA program in creative writing. He continues to play jazz saxophone with the Larry McDonough Quartet. He lives in New Hope.

Of Terrill’s latest book, What Falls Away Is Always, Alberto Rios, Arizona State Poet, says “The collection ends on a tour de force sequence of poems, forging a compelling understanding of jazz and music with a juxtaposition to living our lives inside our lives.”

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A, a book signing, and an open Mic.

This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Blue Heron Coffeehouse, Chapter 2 Books, Friends of the Winona Public Library, and Richard and Sara Ricker.
