RAA member Joan Porter-Einsman is one of the artists who was chosen to participate in the “Summer of Sparky,” sponsored by Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in Saint Paul. Twenty-one statues of Sparky the Sea Lion have been hand-painted by Twin Cities area local artists and are on display at various locations around the metro area this summer. In October, all the Sparky statues will move to Como Park.

Joan’s statue can currently be seen at City House, 258 Mill St., Saint Paul, on the Mississippi River. A reception and pop-up event will be held there on Saturday, August 27, from 2:00-4:00 pm, featuring fun activities and fun ways to learn about ocean conservation.

Joan says: “I have developed my visual language over several years. My inspirations include nature and life itself. My design is a colorful Sparky with her companions, foods, environment needed for survival and a good life.”
