A special celebration of Juneteenth will take place this Wednesday, June 19th, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Windom Park in Winona, MN. This marks the 4th annual Juneteenth event organized and hosted by Our Voices in partnership with Theatre du Mississippi with support from ROAR

The history of Juneteenth in Winona, Minnesota, reflects the broader evolution of Juneteenth celebrations across the United States and the unique contributions of the local community. 

When: June 19th, 2024 

Time: 4 pm-7 pm 

Where: Windom Park 

What: This event brings the community together to learn about Black and Brown heritage, history, and community. Community gathering and educational event with vendors, live music, games, and food. 

Juneteenth: A Brief Overview 

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The day marks June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were free—more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. 

Our Voices in Winona, MN 

“Our Voices” is a community organization in Winona, Minnesota, dedicated to uplifting the voices and experiences of marginalized groups, particularly focusing on racial and social justice. The group is involved in various activities, including advocacy, education, and community-building, often centered around themes of diversity and inclusion. 

Juneteenth in Winona 

Winona has joined many other cities in recent years in recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth. Our Voices is the group that organizes Juneteenth events in the Winona community, creating an environment that fosters understanding and cultural awareness. The events often include music, dance, art, food, educational activities, and discussions that highlight Black and Brown experiences, culture and history.

The celebration of Juneteenth in Winona represents a growing recognition of the importance of this day in American history. It serves as an opportunity to educate the community about the history and ongoing struggles for racial inequality. Through the efforts of organizations like Our Voices, Winona’s Juneteenth celebrations have grown, promoting unity, understanding, and a deeper appreciation for diversity.
