The Plein Air Experience: Sketching Winona
Following the success of our first plein air event in 2023, River Arts Alliance is partnering with the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) to present The Plein Air Experience 2024: Sketching Winona. This weekend of events will take place from Thursday, September 19 through Sunday, September 22 in Winona, Minnesota.
Schedule of Events
The Plein Air Experience: Launch Event | Thursday, Sept. 19 | 6-8 pm, artist panel discussion at 6:30 pm | MMAM | 800 Riverview Dr.
What exactly is this ‘urban sketching’ thing? Why are all these artists showing up in alleyways, on bridges, and in our parks and what exactly are they drawing? Hear from a diverse panel of artists, including Kar-Keat Chong and fellow sketchers Amber Sausen and Daniel Green, who are at the forefront of a new movement, making waves in the art community with their sketchbooks and radical vision for on-location art making. The launch event is free and open to the public with no registration required.
Workshop: Ink and Watercolor Sketching with Kar-Keat Chong | Friday, Sept. 20 & Saturday, Sept. 21 | 9 am-4 pm | MMAM
Are you looking to take your sketching skills to the next level? Join Minneapolis-based architect and watercolorist, Kar-Keat Chong, for a two-day workshop at MMAM focusing on ink and watercolor sketching.
This workshop aims to develop conceptual and practical skills in sketching with ink and watercolor on various types of paper. Participants will be exposed to multiple ink medium pens and learn how to sketch and shade with them. Once participants grasp the basic ink sketching techniques, they will learn how to incorporate watercolor into their ink sketches. During the workshop, participants will also learn about perspectives, composition, color concepts and design.
Skill Prerequisites: Basic drawing and watercolor painting skills. Cost: $425; $400 for RAA members and MMAM members.
