Founded in 2022 by Seamus Schwaba, then fifteen years old, Sugarloaf Community Theatre's mission is to create positive theatre environments for all ages in the Winona community. Whether clapping in the audience or acting in a role as a chicken, mother, wizard or maybe even a chess piece (yup, we’ve had them all), or whether you have zero theatre experience or are a seasoned veteran actor, director, costumer or stage director, Sugarloaf Community Theatre is a friendly, fun and welcoming space to experience the lively and enlivening world of theatre.
Sugarloaf Community Theatre has quickly grown strong, purposeful, and successful roots, offering at least three annual productions:
*THE MUSICAL: We are proud we’ve been able to do this every year, usually in the summer, with everything from original musicals to Snoopy!!! The Musical, a funny and delightful musical based on the Peanuts comic strip, and Through the Looking Glass, a wonderful and wacky show based on Lewis Carroll’s classic novel.
*THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES: Always a blast, these fun shows are the perfect way to introduce children to theatre, but can also be enjoyed by the young at heart! Though children and their families are the target audience for these shows, the cast and crew are community members aged 12+ through adults. Our theatre for young audiences shows have included Rainbow Fish, Sleeping Beauty vs. the NOT so Evil Fairy, and Tales from the Barnyard
*24-HOUR THEATRE: Exactly what it says, the troupe of writers, actors, directors and stage crew go from nothing to three short plays in 24 hours—albeit with a tad of holding their breath. Always a fun, exhausting and exhilarating ride, everyone involved marvels at the achievements and great entertainment.
We are working on obtaining independent, non-profit status. In the meantime, donations made to Sugarloaf Theatre are tax-deductible thanks to fiscal sponsorship by River Arts Alliance. If you want to help us make a difference in the arts we invite you to make a donation online here or by sending a donation to River Arts Alliance at PO Box 992, Winona, MN 55987 with a note that the donation is to Sugarloaf Theatre.
