The film takes place in Vienna, Austria in 1938 when it is occupied by the Nazis. Dr. Josef Bartok is preparing to flee to America when he is arrested by the Gestapo. Refusing to cooperate, he is locked in solitary confinement and as his mind begins to crack, he disappears into the world of chess, maintaining his sanity only by memorizing every move. Learn more.
