Hailing from the great state of Minnesota, Zak Fellman’s work is deeply rooted in the rhythms, landscapes, and textures of the North. A printmaker and painter by trade, Zak draws from his home state's forests, lakes, and cultural undercurrents to create art that resonates far beyond its geographic origin. Whether it’s the stark contrast of ink on paper or the bold hues of vintage comics reimagined through a northern lens, Zak’s work speaks to a sense of place—its stillness, its wildness, and its quiet strength.

Zak’s printmaking centers around a unique form of relief printing. Using sections of felled trees, he prepares each slice to become a printing plate, revealing the rings that map the tree’s life. These natural timelines are inked and pressed, transforming once-living wood into enduring marks on paper. The result is a striking collaboration between artist and nature—preserving the story of time, growth, and the quiet strength of the natural world.

As a painter, Zak explores a northern take on pop art and vintage comic book aesthetics. His canvases blend bold outlines, flat colors, and stylized figures with imagery rooted in northern iconography—deer, snowmobiles, loons, winterscapes and more that you’d likely find nestled at your Grandma’s lake cabin. By fusing nostalgia for vintage comic books with his love for the North, Zak creates a playful tension between the familiar and the unexpected. His work revisits classic Americana through a colder, more introspective lens, reimagining pop culture in a way that’s uniquely Minnesotan.

Despite the distinct mediums he works in, a common thread runs through all of Zak’s art: a deep reverence for time, memory, and place. His prints reveal the slow passage of years etched in the rings of trees, while his paintings reinterpret northern culture through the lens of contemporary storytelling. Though his work has traveled globally, it remains firmly connected to the landscapes and spirit of the North, drawing viewers into an exchange between the environment and imagination, where age-old rhythms meet modern perspectives.

In everything he creates, Zak honors both the tactile beauty of his materials and the tales they hold, shaping a visual language that is at once connected to place and rich in meaning.
