Dr. Christopher Mechell, of St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, will give the benefit concert, featuring music from the time-frame of Napoleon and of George Gale. This time-frame relates to the gift of books from Dorothy Twesme which will be unveiled at the concert.
Dorothy Twesme has given Old Main a rare first edition copy, printed in 1827, of The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French by Sir Walter Scott (a 9-volume set), a copy of which George Gale read when he was 15 years old. George Gale wrote that reading this book is what set him to reading everything he could get his hands on until eventually he founded Galesville, Gale College, and Trempealeau County. Old Main was, of course, built as the home for the college.
A reception with cake will follow. Free-will donations will help to support our Gale Star fund for stipends to student performers at Old Main. Music faculty tell us these off-campus performances are important for the development of music students; the stipends are a help for music education, and the program helps maintain our educational connections with regional universities.
