John Paulson to Present Pre-Concert Talk Feb. 1 at the Friendship Center

Jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader Dr. John Paulson will present a free pre-concert talk February 1st at 1:00 pm at the Winona Friendship Center, 251 Main St. In addition to discussing upcoming concerts and recordings, his presentation will include a comparison and contrast between his music and the popular big band jazz of earlier times, as well as a brief description of how he writes and arranges music for his own band.

Back to back concerts, celebrating 10 years of successful concerts, recordings and educational residencies, will be held at the beautifully renovated Winona Arts Center, Saturday evening, February 4th at 7:00 pm and another Sunday, February 5th at 3:00 pm — learn more here. This activity is made possible through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council in cooperation with a private foundation.

John Paulson started his musical journey in Rochester, MN and got his B.M and M.M from the University of Utah and his DMA in music education from the University of Washington. He’s played sax for over 60 years and studied flute and clarinet with symphony players. After 35 years of full time teaching, Dr. Paulson retired from Saint Mary’s University of MN and taught jazz studies at Winona State University for five years. He’s a member of ISJAC, ASCAP and JEN.
