The flute and piano duo, Dr. Iva Ugrčić (flute) and Dr. Satoko Hayami (piano), will appear in concert at Old Main in Galesville Sunday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. Described as “luminaries,” “world class,” and “adventurous,” this flute-piano pair has been captivating audiences since 2017. They will take the audience on a musical journey that spans centuries and traverses a myriad of musical styles. They invite you to the deep emotional experience of J. S. Bach’s Sonata in E Minor, the timeless beauty of Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on “Trockne Blumen,” and a spectrum of emotions, colors and beautiful melodies presented in Sonata, Op. 64 by Mel Bonis. Throughout this concert, the flute and piano engage in a passionate conversation, each note telling a story, and each piece carrying us deeper into the heart of music. Iva and Satoko hope you will join them on this voyage! Refreshments will be served at intermission.

Admission is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for people in high school and younger. A sign at W Gale Ave. (Hwy. T) and 12th St. points south to Old Main at 20869 College Ave.

Performer Biographies:

Dr. Iva Ugrčić

An award-winning Serbian flutist Dr. Iva Ugrčić is one of the most exciting and adventurous flutists in the international pantheon. Known for her “amazing virtuosic technique, impeccable intonation, and gorgeous rich tone throughout the registers” (The American Prize 2023), she has garnered international acclaim. Her performances, both as a soloist and a collaborator in chamber and orchestral settings, have graced renowned music festivals and venues across the world.

Named the “Musician of the Year for 2018” by the Well-Tempered Ear and “Woman to Watch 2022” in BRAVA Magazine, Dr. Ugrčić enjoys unique and versatile career as a performer, speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and music advocate. A versatile and adventurous artist, Iva has resided in Serbia, Germany, and France prior to her relocation to the United States.

As an avid supporter of new music, Dr. Ugrčić frequently collaborates with composers on the creation of new works to expand the flute repertoire. She is especially passionate about embracing diversity in her performances by elevating music featuring underrepresented perspectives and lived experiences, with a special focus on collaborating with women composers.

Dr. Ugrčić currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Rural Musicians Forum and is a member of the Career & Artistic Development Committee of the National Flute Association.

As an entrepreneur, Dr. Ugrčić is the Founder & CEO/Artistic Director of LunART, an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to support, inspire, promote, and celebrate women in the arts. Under her leadership in 2022 alone, LunART received a Silver Lining Award for outstanding contribution to the art community, and a Programming Award from the International Alliance for Women in Music.

Furthermore, Iva is the Owner & Coach at Artistic Wealth Coach, LLC., offering financial and career coaching services to artists and creatives globally.

Her most recent accomplishment includes receiving a national acclaim winning The American Prize in solo performance, professional division in September of 2023.

Dr. Satoko Hayami

A versatile and acclaimed collaborative pianist, Dr. Satoko Hayami is in constant demand for collaborations with today’s leading musicians including Grammy winners and artists from prominent ensembles such as the San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Lyric Orchestra, Decoda Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, and Madison Symphony Orchestra. Previously based in Madison, WI, Satoko continues to frequently perform with the world-class faculty members of the Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also performs as a pianist for numerous prominent chamber music festivals such as LunART Festival, Madison New Music Festival, Caroga Lake Music Festival, and Third Coast Chamber Collective Concerts among others.

Various collaborative projects brought her to perform and teach solo, duo, and chamber music worldwide, most notably in Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Canada, and throughout the United States. In the United States, Satoko performed in prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in D.C.; Millers Outdoor Theater in Houston, TX; Harris Hall in Aspen, CO; Overture Center for the Performing Arts and Memorial Union Shannon Hall in Madison, WI. Satoko’s most recent piano teaching positions included a Lecturer in Collaborative Piano at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a piano instructor at Beloit College.

Also a passionate performer of new music, Satoko co-founded Sound Out Loud Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble that received national acclaim in 2018, winning first prize in Chamber Music Performance of The American Prize.

As an advocate of community engagement practices in the arts, Satoko has collaborated with diverse local organizations both in Japan and the United States, such as Arida City Welfare Council (Japan), Kimino Village Educational Committee (Japan), Goodman Community Center (USA), and Madison Japanese Language School (USA), co-creating unique and nurturing creative programs with and for community members. She teaches interdisciplinary courses such as “Arts and Community,” “Arts and Tourism,” and “Creating Sound Art” at Osaka University of Tourism in Japan, starting in April 2024.

Satoko received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a recipient of the prestigious Paul Collins Wisconsin Distinguished Fellowship. She completed her coursework for her doctorate minor in Arts Administration at the Bolz Center for Arts Administration at Wisconsin Business School. She finished her Master of Music degrees at Rice University and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
