J.P. White, who has distinguished himself as one of Minnesota’s most dedicated writers for the past 40 years, will be the featured guest for the April 2 Laureates Writers Series. White will read from and discuss his writing life at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse, beginning at 7 pm.

The series is co-sponsored by a generous donation from local publisher Tom Driscoll of Shipwreckt Books, and by Chapter Two Books and Friends of the Winona Public Library. The Blue Heron Coffeehouse has hosted the series for several years.

White established a strong Minnesota presence as a writer in the 1970’s, but has had work published in national journals as well. His essays, fiction, reviews, interviews and poetry have appeared in The Nation, The New Republic, The Gettysburg Review, The North American Review, Prairie Schooner, Sewanee Review, The Georgia Review, Southern Review, The Massachusetts Review, The New York Times, Alaska Quarterly Review and many other journals.

White is the author of six books of poems, and of a novel, Every Boat Turns South. His 6th book, A Tree Becomes a Room, was the most recent winner of the White Pine Poetry Prize. A second novel, The Last Tale of Norah Bow, is forthcoming in August of this year.

When he is not busy writing he serves as the editor-at-large for Plant-Human Quarterly.

“It’s always easy to find me,” he says. “I get up with the first birds, hoping to sing for my breakfast.”

Following White’s presentation members of the community are welcome to read a short selection of their own work for the open mic part of the program.
