Winona Brass Band Season Finale May 5
The Winona Brass Band will conclude their 30th Anniversary Season with a celebratory concert at Central Lutheran Church (259 W Wabasha Street) on Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 pm. The Brass Band and Central Lutheran’s Hendrickson Pipe Organ are each celebrating 30 years of great music. To honor these two anniversaries, the performance will highlight music for brass band and organ.
The centerpiece features organist Sandy Todd on Jan Bosveld’s Fantasy for Organ and Brass Band. The 2005 composition incorporates the organ as an extension of the brass band instrumentation – but also has solo moments. Other works that include organ are an opening concert fanfare commissioned by the band entitled Hark, the Glad Sound. Composer Eric Heukeshoven will move from the euphonium section to the organ for his composition. Heukeshoven will also be organist on the lovely Swedish Hymn and The Lost Chord, composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) arranged by Gordon Langford.
Other works have been selected primarily from the 30-year history of the ensemble, including two traditional British marches and William Himes’ poignant arrangement of Amazing Grace.
The concert is free and open to all. Donations will be accepted in support of the Winona Brass Band’s next decade. A reception will follow immediately after the concert in the adjacent Grace Hall.
