Inspired by Artist Judy Onofrio, MMAM’s Fall Seasonal Saturday is a Flight of Fancy
On Saturday, November 9, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) will hold its Fall Seasonal Saturday event. With $1 admission, live music, art-making, guided tours, and programming centered around a theme, Seasonal Saturdays strive to increase access to the arts for everyone. The November theme, Flights of Fancy, is inspired by the current MMAM exhibition Judy Onofrio: Deep Dive.
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to meet Rochester, MN based artist, Judy Onofrio, in her gallery from 2 pm to 4 pm. Onofrio creates large-scale sculptures that are inspired by underwater flora and fauna, and celebrate life’s color, matching perfectly with her sense of humor and creative spirit.
Then, taking inspiration from the Onofrio’s exhibition, visitors are invited to create a fantastical animal sculpture using a variety of materials in the Oberton Education Room. There will also be 30-minute highlights tours of MMAM’s current exhibitions and Deep Dive, that will be offered through the day.
The Fall Seasonal Saturday Community Partner, the Winona Community Warming Center, Catholic Charities, will be onsite from 10 am to 3 pm letting visitors know what they are doing to help Winona’s neighbors that are experiencing homelessness and what they can do to help. Attendees are encouraged to bring an item for the donation bin, including laundry pods, travel-size shampoo, bottled water, or rain ponchos.
Seasonal Saturday visitors can enjoy live music in the galleries by Jim Reineke (jazz mandolinist) from 11 am – 12 pm, and from Patina (Irish music) from 3 – 4 pm, or go on a gallery scavenger hunt with the game Bingo Overboard. Bingo is for all ages and abilities and every participant wins a prize.
Project FINE will be at the museum from 10 am – 1 pm to offer interpretation for Spanish and Hmong speaking participants. MMAM is also pleased to offer free rides to and from the museum with the Winona Transit Service Dial-a-Ride. Please call 507-454-6666 to schedule a ride. The Fall Seasonal Saturday event runs from 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, November 9, at MMAM, which is located at 800 Riverview Drive in Winona, MN. Seasonal Saturdays are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Seasonal Saturdays are also supported by our generous sponsors, WNB Financial, BNSF, Coca-Cola of Winona, s2s Architects, and Pelaez Creative.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a nonprofit art museum that creates meaningful art experiences that explore our relationship with water. Located in Winona, Minnesota, the purpose-built museum is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and boasts six galleries, an educational and events space, and a destination retail shop on its seven acre riverside campus. It is through this surprising diversity that MMAM is not only describing what marine art is, but pushing the boundaries of what marine art can be.
