The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) invites visitors to its Winter Seasonal Saturday, inspired by MMAM’s new literary arts exhibition Once Upon a Shore. This lively event will take place on Saturday, February 8, from 10 am to 5 pm, offering a full day of activities for just $1 admission. The event is free for MMAM members and children 5 and under.
Inspired by MMAM’s new literary arts exhibition Once Upon a Shore, the theme of this Seasonal Saturday is Gathering Ground.
Seasonal Saturday Highlights:
- Guided Tours: Visitors can explore the museum’s current exhibitions, including Once Upon a Shore, through guided tours focusing on its Gathering Ground theme. Hourly tours, starting at 10:15 am, provide a deeper dive into the stories and inspirations behind the artworks.
- Live Music: Enjoy performances by local favorites Covered Hotdish from 11 am-12 pm and the Heart Strings Harp Circle from 3-4 p.m.
- Art-Making for All Ages: Create your own mixed-media artwork inspired by this month’s theme in the Oberton Education Room throughout the day.
- Community Engagement: Meet representatives from MMAM’s Community Partner, Conservation Minnesota (10 am–3 pm) and transform invasive buckthorn into artistic medallions.
- Storytelling and Sound Art: Sound artist Dameun Strange, featured in A Nation Takes Place, will collect local stories and sounds about the Mississippi River to incorporate into an upcoming art piece from 1-3pm.
- Bingo Overboard: Don’t miss this popular search-and-find game in the galleries – prizes await!
Accessibility and Community Inclusion:
MMAM is committed to making art accessible to all. Hmong and Spanish interpreters from Project FINE will be on-site from 10 am-1 pm to provide language support. Additionally, free transportation is available through Winona Area Transit Service’s Dial-A-Ride. Visitors can schedule rides in advance by calling 507-454-6666; MMAM will cover all transportation costs.
“This event embodies our mission to connect people with art, water, and community,” said Heather Casper, Curator of Learning and Community Impact for MMAM. “Seasonal Saturday is an invitation for everyone to engage with art in ways that are meaningful to them, whether through creating, listening, or simply exploring.”

Seasonal Saturdays are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Seasonal Saturdays are also supported by our generous sponsors s2s Architects and Pelaez Creative.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a nonprofit art museum that creates meaningful art experiences that explore our relationship with water. Located in Winona, Minnesota, the purpose-built museum is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and boasts six galleries, an educational and events space, and a destination retail shop on its seven acre riverside campus. It is through this surprising diversity that MMAM is not only describing what marine art is, but pushing the boundaries of what marine art can be.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a member of the River Arts Alliance. To learn more about the benefits of membership, please visit: riverartsalliance.org/membership/.
