The Winona Arts Center at 228 E 5th Street is hosting a screening of the film Chess Story on Friday, October 25th at 7:00 pm  The gallery opens at 6:00. Cost is $5.

The film takes place in Vienna, Austria in 1938 when it is occupied by the Nazis. Dr. Josef Bartok is preparing to flee to America when he is arrested by the Gestapo. As a former notary to the deposed Austrian aristocracy, he is instructed to hand over access to their private bank accounts. Refusing to cooperate, he is locked in solitary confinement and as his mind begins to crack, he disappears into the world of chess, maintaining his sanity only by memorizing every move.

Directed by Philipp Stolzl. 112 minutes. German with English subtitles.
