River Arts Alliance Member, Jamie Schwaba of Schwaba Drama Art has over 30 pieces on exhibit at the La Crosse Regional Airport in La Crosse, WI as a part of the Art on the Fly program.

The exhibit opened July 5th and will run through the end of October 2025. The full exhibit can be viewed by travelers with incoming or outgoing flights, however about half of the pieces are in areas that are open to the public.

About Jamie and the Exhibit:

Jamie is an artist based in Winona, Minnesota. The work in this exhibit is inspired by her love of the Driftless Region, as well as by her love of color and music. Jamie fell in love with the Driftless Region after moving here 10 years ago with her family, and soon began to draw and paint the local hotspots and novel landscapes. She hopes that by featuring these special local places, plus the wildlife and history of the area, this exhibit will create a platform for conversations, education, and will spark memories for all who call the Driftless home.

The arts have always played an important role in Jamie’s life, but she fell in love with oil pastels in 2020 while moderating online classes as the managing director of a community arts school. Now her days just don’t seem complete without setting aside a little time to create. Her biggest accomplishment as an artist is having a piece she created using a page of sheet music from the musical “Show Boat” selected to deck the walls of the Museum of Broadway in New York City.

Jamie loves to play with different media and to paint and draw on different surfaces. Most pieces in the exhibit feature multiple mediums including ink, watercolor, oil pastels, PanPastels, markers, colored pencils, and more, all created on such surfaces as vintage atlas pages, recipes, and sheet music.

About Art on the Fly:

Art on the Fly is a fine-art exhibition program hosted by the La Crosse Regional Airport, an effort that hosts three to four shows per year by regional artists in our recently remodeled terminal. We exhibit paintings, prints, photography, any two-dimensional art, in both the TSA secure area and the non-secure areas throughout the terminal.

The goal of the program is to enhance the travelers’ experience, showcase the fine arts of the region, and provide artists with a new exhibition venue. The La Crosse Regional Airport hosts some 50,000 travelers each year.

Depending on the artists’ preference, art may be for sale. The program is always looking for new artists from the region. Please contact Aviation Board member Drake Hokanson at dhokanson@winona.edu.
