Artist Statement
Ellen Kolbo-McDonah

As both a river kayaker and painter, my work is shaped by direct experiences in the natural world. Traveling by water provides a unique perspective on the landscape, allowing me to observe subtle changes in light, color, and atmosphere that often go unnoticed.

Working primarily on location, I use oil paints, watercolors, and pastels to capture the character and energy of rivers, shorelines, and wild places. Each medium offers a distinct way to interpret the landscape, while the outdoor setting brings an immediacy and authenticity to the creative process.

My paintings explore the relationship between movement and stillness, adventure and observation. Through my work, I seek to convey a sense of connection to the natural environment and invite viewers to experience the beauty, power, and tranquility of these landscapes. By sharing these moments, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation for the places that inspire us and sustain us.
