…in the space between is a new site-specific contemporary dance film project, embodying the poetic and environmentally intimate spaces of in-betweenness.

This project, with support from an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, began in February 2018 with a visual installation and residency/research lab in the Watkins Gallery on Winona State University Campus presented by WSU’s Department of Art. During that period Sharon worked with both Visual Art students from the Art Department and Dance students from WSU’s Dance Program to explore in-betweenness through visual and movement expressions.

Research continued with a dance performance and visual art installation at one of Sharon Mansur’s SHIFT~ performance salons at Infinity Yoga Studio in April 2018, in collaboration with guest visual/sound artist Sarah Johnson. These initial creations and experiments became the foundation for the images and themes for the dance film including: the color yellow, clothespins, envelopes, a watering can, measuring tapes and yard sticks.

Minneapolis-based artists Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad of BodyCartography Project traveled to Winona to shoot footage with Sharon over a three day period in July, working in several outdoor sites throughout the town of Winona. And Winona dance/video artist Sydney Swanson filmed supplemental footage afterwards.

Sharon Mansur, Sydney Swanson, and Outpost Winona are members of the River Arts Alliance. To learn more about the benefits of membership, please visit: riverartsalliance.org/JOIN.
