Attention all jazz fans! John Paulson’s Big Band returns to Winonafor a special performance at the newly renovated St. Cecilia Theatre on the campus of Cotter High School. The concert will feature the world premier of a new jazz ensemble chart by saxophonist and director John Paulson.

Paulson taught jazz at Saint Mary’s University for over 30 years and recently retired from part time teaching at Winona State University. His first big band CD “The John Paulson Big Band Project” was released in 2012 and the band’s 2nd CD “Five Years On” came out in 2018. Their latest recording was selected as one of the top 10 CD’s of 2018 by the jazz station KBEM in the Twin Cities. The group includes some of the best jazz players and teachers in the region plus the addition of vocalist and recording artist Ariane Lydon. They are unique in that they perform only original big band jazz composed and arranged by musical director John Paulson. The music is an exciting mix of contemporary blues, Latin, ballads, funk and swing with plenty of solo space for the players. Since starting in 2012, they have done numerous grant sponsored clinics and concerts at area high schools plus performing at the Sheldon Theatre, Saint Mary’s University, Winona State University and at the Jazz Educators’ national convention in Louisville, KY.

The concert is free but contributions are welcome to offset expenses. For more information go to www.paulsonjazz.com.
