The artsXchange program, a collaboration between River Arts Alliance (RAA) and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM), continues on Thursday evening, October 19, with this event led by photographer and RAA member Pete Mutschler.

Taking good pictures is easy these days. Creating great images is much harder, but well within the reach of most people with a cell phone and a computer.  There is a lot of conversation in the photographic world about the use of digital tools and how much manipulation is appropriate. Photoshop and similar programs have given us incredibly powerful tools to adjust, combine and manipulate existing images. With artificial intelligence, individuals can now create photographs of things that don’t really exist.

For this workshop, local photographer Pete Mutschler will walk you through the basics of where technology fits in your efforts to create great images and how you can use it to create your own style. Included in the program will be a discussion on how some of the great photographers in the past may have used technology and where tools, such as those driven by artificial intelligence, may lead us.

We will be working on actual images during the workshop, so feel free to bring some of your own (on a flash drive) if you are willing to share.

This event is free to attend for members of RAA or MMAM, and included with museum admission for others. (Museum admission is free for students on Thursdays.) Registration is required, and space is limited to 25 attendees per program. Register here.

About the host:

Pete Mutschler is a professional freelance photographer based in Winona, Minnesota. Although Pete studied photography at the UW Madison in the early 1980’s he was not able to focus full time on his craft until recently. After 35 years as an Environment and Safety Professional, Pete became a Certified Professional Photographer in 2022. Pete currently has images hanging in the River Arts, Inc.’s 6th Biennial Wings and Water Exhibition in Prairie du Sac, WI and at the Winona Arts Center. He has another piece scheduled to be shown at the Pump House’s Mississippi River themed art exhibition in early 2024.

Pete strives to create provocative images that promote an emotional connection with the viewers. Growing up in Madison, WI in the 70’s Pete’s favorite artist was Aaron Bohrod, who had a very realistic painting style in those days and many of his works were often mistaken for photographs. Thus, Pete gets a lot of satisfaction when people confuse his photographs with paintings. No matter what the subject matter, Pete uses current technology to craft images that are high in quality and unique to the genre.

About artsXchange:

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum + River Arts Alliance are coming together to bring you a monthly informal artist exchange – a chance for artists and creatives from across a variety of mediums to gather for inspiration, exploration and exchange at the museum. Each month, a member from River Arts Alliance, a nonprofit that supports and celebrates regional arts and culture, hosts a 90-minute artist meet-up and conversation with an artist, maker, designer, writer, or another creative person.

See more about previous artsXchange events here, here, here, and here. If you are a River Arts Alliance member interested in hosting a future artsXchange, please contact Arts Administrator Johanna Rupprecht at admin@riverartsalliance.org.
