The Winona Brass Band is excited to kick off its 2023-2024 season featuring music from the first decade of their 30 years together as an ensemble. The free concert will be held in the beautiful St. Cecilia Theatre (1124 West Wabasha Street – Winona, MN) at 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 5th.

The concert will feature selections celebrating the British musical tradition, including Gordon Langford’s Fantasy on British Sea Songs and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite. Other highlights include Derek Bourgeois’ Serenade, originally composed as the organ postlude for his wedding, and Malcolm Arnold’s powerful Little Suite for Brass. Music by Jacob de Haan and Joseph John Richards round out the program.

The distinctive sound of a traditional British Brass Band comes from its unique instrumentation; cornets, flugelhorn, tenor horns, trombones, baritones, euphoniums, tubas, and percussion – 28 players in all.

Plan to experience all three concerts this season! A holiday themed performance is scheduled for the afternoon of December 10th, also at St. Cecilia Auditorium. The spring concert on May 5, 2024, will take place at Central Lutheran Church featuring music for organ and brass. Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, the ensemble’s founding director, returns to the podium this year. All performances are free, but donations are gladly accepted.

The Winona Brass Band is a non-profit community ensemble whose members come from throughout the region. If you’re a brass or percussion player and are interested in membership opportunities please contact Janet Heukeshoven at jheukesh@smumn.edu or WBB board president, John Helm at helmje2@gmail.com.
