Driftless Past & Present is a visual art exhibit held at MN Conservatory for the Arts (MCA). All pieces were created by Winona artist, Jamie Schwaba. The art mediums & styles in the pieces exhibited will be vast, featuring ink & watercolor, oil pastels, PanPastels, and more created on surfaces including vintage atlas pages, recipes, & sheet music. The colorful exhibit will appeal to all ages & will be tied together by the common thread of being connected to the Driftless.
The Driftless region is a special Midwest region comprising of portions of MN, WI, IA, & IL. This area was never covered by ice during the last ice age; the area lacks the characteristic glacial deposits known as drift. The area is known for its steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and geology including spring-fed waterfalls and cold-water trout streams. It is also home to amazing entrepreneurs, a rich history, and cozy spots.
“Since moving to Winona, MN which is in the Driftless area 10 years ago, I have witnessed the great pride & interest the community feels about our area by featuring local places, wildlife, & history. It is my hope that this exhibit will create a platform for conversations, education, & spark memories about the Driftless Region,” stated the artist, Jamie Schwaba.
The exhibit runs August 19-September 27 in MCA’s Galleria Valencia and will be open for public viewing during regular MCA business hours (as listed on the bottom of this webpage: https://www.cotterschools.org/
